Basic Child Protection Awareness Training

Who the course is for: If you work/ volunteer with children, young people and families, this basic child protection awareness training is essential for you.

You can access the training at anytime that’s convenient for you. The Local Safeguarding Children’s Board has invested £5000 in an e-learning package, which you can access at www.tameside.gov.uk/childprotection/elearning. If you would like to apply for the training just download and complete the application form at the bottom of the webpage. 

If you prefer to learn with other people there will be a training session here at T3SC especially for the voluntary, community faith sector on the 25 February 2008 between 10am. and 1pm. If you can’t make this session, don’t worry - there is a running programme with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council which you can attend. Communities in Space

A special free event to launch Combine Greater Manchester Community Building Information Network
Thursday 27 March 2008 10.30 – 3.00pm
Community Hubs @ Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation (GMCVO)

An out-of-this-world opportunity for anyone involved in community hubs to come together, share success, gain skills and access resources.

There will be:

  • Practical workshops on key issues

  • Expert speakers and case studies

  • Networking opportunities, information sharing and more

  • Lunch and refreshments will be provided

Subjects covered will include

  • Improving a facility? A guide to key factors aiding success

  • Health and Safety and Risk Assessment for community buildings

  • finding resources, skill sharing and getting stuff for free

The day will see the official launch of Greater Manchester COMBINE (Community Buildings Information Network) COMBINE aims to bring community hubs together for support and strength. It will offer regular meetings, events and training, an email newsletter and other services which will develop flexibly according to the needs of members.

Communicating with Disabled Children
5 March 2008,  9.15-3.00 Venue: Festival Hall, Denton on 9 May 2008

This is a one day course designed to explore the issues around communicating with disabled children, including children with learning difficulties and communication difficulties. It is designed to promote practice that complies with current legislative, regulatory and practice requirements.
These include Every Child Matters, Every Disabled Child Matters, UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Disability Equality Duty, 1989 Children Act, 2004 Children Act.It is also designed to link to specific strands of workforce development. It is useful but not essential if applicants have attended the one day 'Communicating with Children' course.
Course Facilitators: Anne Reid and Angela Holland

Aims of the course:

  • To increase awareness of the need to actively communicate and consult with disabled children.

  • To explore methods of communication, and to consider/recognise/address the barriers and difficulties.

  • To consider the views of disabled children, and how to promote inclusion and participation

  • To recognise the importance of communication in keeping children safe.

Who would benefit from this course:

  • All staff and carers who are in direct contact with children in their work

  • Foster carers, social workers, community support workers, residential workers, family support workers, staff from the wider workforce involved in working with children.

Additional information:
The timing of the training has been designed to make it accessible for carers and others who may have limited daytime availability

Anti Bullying & Cyber Safety
6 Feb 08, 9.30-12.30pm Venue: Dukinfield Town Hall

An Overview of the issues and preventive work in schools and in families and thinking about Cyber Safety: helping young people stay safe in personal relationships and stranger danger on line.
Course Facilitator: Theresa Coughlan

Aims of the course:

  • To increase the level of knowledge and awareness of issues relating to bullying.

  • To provide opportunity for interactive discussion to help reflect on our roles to supporting children and young people.

  • The course will provide strategies and supporting information to help identify and manage situations or potential of bullying

Who would benefit from this course:
Foster/Kinship carers, residential support staff and those care workers whose work with children may bring them into contact with any related bullying issues.

Additional information:

The course aims to be interactive and provide opportunity for signposting additional resources and contacts.

RNID Start to Sign Course
19 February 2008
from 10.00am to 4.00pm at the RNID Manchester office.

A little sign language can go a very long way when it comes to basic communication with deaf customers or employees. The RNID are holding one of their highly popular 1 day courses in Start to Sign. The course is taught by experienced trainers who are themselves deaf and it is possible to learn enough on a short Start to Sign course to help with basic level communication. Attendance will also help you to comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

By the end of the course attendees will be able to:

  • understand the structure of British Sign Language (BSL)

  • hold a basic dialogue in BSL without relying on writing or an interpreter

  • be able to produce and understand the BSL alphabet

The courses are designed to give a high level of interaction with the opportunity to benefit from practical sessions. Numbers on the course are limited to 12. Lunch, refreshments and all course materials are provided.
